University College Cork (UCC) has launched a new era of synergistic research aimed at advancing the understanding of brain disorders and of ageing, to promoting healthy ageing, and to improving diagnosis, prevention and treatment of age-related disorders.

UCC Futures – Future Ageing and Brain Science is the next phase of the University’s ambitious new programme of research recruitment and prioritisation. Future Ageing and Brain Science will advance the development of groundbreaking discoveries and technologies, responding to the challenges of brain disorders and diseases of ageing.

Future Ageing and Brain Science is committed to advancing transdisciplinary research and teaching, building upon our renowned expertise to tackle the growing challenges posed by brain disorders and age-related diseases. This area of research prioritisation will enhance healthy ageing, emphasising brain health promotion as a means to combat the leading causes of dependency and institutionalisation within our communities, both in Ireland and globally.

Professor John F. Cryan, UCC Vice President for Research and Innovation said: "We are delighted to launch the next phase of our UCC Futures programme – Future Ageing and Brain Science. Ageing and brain disorders are among the greatest challenges of our time, requiring sustainable solutions to address the health, socioeconomic and cultural challenges and opportunities that face a growing and ageing global population. Future Ageing & Brain Science is a focused collaborative research effort to improve outcomes and quality-of-life for all individuals and for our society."

As part of this new initiative, UCC today announces that applications are sought for 15 academic positions as part of UCC Futures – Future Ageing and Brain Science. The appointment of researchers of excellence, from Lecturer to Professor, across multiple Schools, will connect disciplines and promote interdisciplinary research opportunities across all Colleges, particularly within the College of Medicine and Health.

These academic posts are a key part of the UCC Futures – Future Ageing and Brain Science recruitment programme. Applications are particularly welcome from those with a disruptive and transformative research focus and from those at the intersection of these disciplines.

Professor Aideen Sullivan, Director of UCC Futures – Future Ageing and Brain Science, and Head of Anatomy & Neuroscience at UCC, said: "At UCC, we have a strong track record of collaborative and transdisciplinary research on ageing and the neurosciences. Researching ageing and brain science using a multidisciplinary approach, from molecular and cellular levels, through to lifestyle, environmental and social aspects, will allow enhanced awareness of healthy ageing and brain health, ultimately improving quality of life in our society."
