Green Week begins at UCC next week

4 Mar 2022

A community market, an interactive wall of climate action in the Glucksman Gallery, and a creative exploration of UCC’s beautiful campus are among the activities planned for University College Corks’ annual Green Week.

Running from 7th to 11th March, UCC welcomes its students, staff and wider community to learn more about the importance of climate action both on a local, national & international level.

A large giant sign made of rubbish collected from within the University will feature on campus as a symbol of the waste reduction achieved and the work still to do. According to the most recent figures on university waste management, UCC reduced its overall waste by 56% from 2019 to 2020. (full statistics breakdown here).

Professor John O’Halloran, President of University College Cork said:

“UCC’s Green Campus programme is “student-led, research-informed and practice-focused”.  This Green Week, we welcome the opportunity to support our students in calling for a better and more sustainable future. UCC has led the way in sustainability in Higher Education and we pledge to continue to be open, ambitious and evidence based in delivering our climate action and sustainability programme.”

Alicia O’Sullivan, Environmental Officer for UCC Students’ Union said:

"Everyone at UCC is really excited about Green Week, of course we are following up what was a huge success with RAG Week, but we are sure Green Week will be as eventful. UCC is an institution that not only actively works in the green space, but we are also aware that we have a long way to go too. This week is about bringing environmentalism and sustainability to the forefront of UCC students’ and staffs’ minds. With a wide range of events and activities planned, if this is something that you are already interested in or have never heard of before there is something for you."

University College Cork works in collaboration with UCC Students’ Union on its annual Green Week.
