UCC to celebrate the creative arts with a public event in September
Some of Ireland’s leading filmmakers, novelists and musicians will gather together for a public event at University College Cork (UCC) on Wednesday, September 11.
This will be the first occasion that UCC has brought together all of its current Artists in Residence for an evening of performance and discussion in the creative arts.
Artists in Residence that will be in attendance will include award-winning Irish film-maker, writer and theatre director, Alan Gilsenan (UCC / Irish Arts Council Film Artist in Residence), novelist Sara Maitland (UCC / Cork City Council / Munster Literature Centre Frank O’Connor International Short Story Fellow 2019/20), novelist Danny Denton (UCC / Irish Arts Council Writer in Residence), whose first novel, The Earlie King & The Kid In Yellow, was nominated for ‘Newcomer of the Year’ at the Irish Book Awards in 2018.
Musicians including traditional accordion player Danny O’ Mahony (UCC / Irish Arts Council Traditional Artist in Residence) and traditional Irish concertina and piano player Jack Talty (UCC / Irish Arts Council Traditional Artist in Residence) will also perform on the night as will theatre writer, actor and director, John McCarthy (UCC / Cork Opera House Theatre Artist in Residence).
“From film to literature, music to architecture, this is a night that will celebrate the rich diversity of the creative arts to inspire and we hope our community joins us,” commented UCC Professor of Creative Practice, Jools Gilson.
The Artists in Residence and Student Showcase begins at 6pm on September 11 at the Aula Maxima in UCC. Attendance at the event is free but members of the public must book.
UCC’s Artists in Residence programme began more than 25 years ago with the Writer in Residence in the Department (now School) of English. The Traditional Artist, the Film Artist and the Theatre Artist in Residence alongside more recent fellowships in Creative Writing have been added over the last five years and demonstrate UCC’s commitment to providing opportunities for professional artists to devote time to their practice, whilst also engaging with students, staff and our wider communities.
