A look back at MESA's contributions to ENVIRON 2019

18 Apr 2019

All three student members of the MESA research group presented work at this year's ENVIRON, held at IT Carlow.

Irene, Hannah & Lauren presented research at this year's ENVIRON conference, organised by the Environmental Sciences Association of Ireland (ESAI), hosted in association with IT Carlow.

Masters student, Lauren Quinlivan, presented a talk entitled "Science of the future? - Does citizen science provide a means of monitoring water quality for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?", which investigated whether a group of citizen scientists can produce accurate water quality data on parameters associated with UN SDG Indicator 6.3.2, intended for the determination of ambient water quality in waterbodies.

Masters student, Hannah Binner, presented a talk entitled "Assessment of the potential environmental impacts arising from mercury-free dental restorative materials". Hannah's research addresses the knowledge gap associated with a potential impact that alternative dental materials may have when released into the environment, and she presented results of dental wastewater analysis.

PhD candidate, Irene O'Callaghan, presented a talk entitled "Asellus aquaticus as a potential biomontor of trace metal pollution in freshwaters". This was an examination of the uptake and bioaccumulation of heavy metals by the benthic isopod, A. aquaticus, and how this relates to the species' potential for use as a biomonitor.
