Project Title: Investigating the Respiratory Impact of Electronic Cigarette Use: A Radiological and Epidemiological Study
Summary: This research will focus on the effects of chronic e-cigarette use on lung health. The study aims to investigate the radiological findings associated with vaping on CT imaging, conduct a systematic review of the existing literature on radiological findings of vaping, and examine the prevalence of e-cigarette use among Irish healthcare students.
Through these studies, the research seeks to improve understanding of the potential respiratory consequences of long term vaping and inform future public health and clinical practice.
Project Title: Artificial Intelligence for CT Scan Range Optimisation: Over-scanning, Radiographer Interaction and International Practice Patterns
Summary: Computed tomography (CT) is a major contributor to medical radiation exposure. Over-scanning, defined as scan coverage extending beyond clinically required anatomical boundaries, is a recognised source of unnecessary radiation exposure and may hinder dose optimisation efforts. My project aims to investigate the potential of AI to support CT scan range optimisation through automated scan range planning and over-scanning assessment.
Project Title: Ultra-Low-Dose Whole-Body CT for Suspected Physical Abuse
Summary: This PhD investigates the potential use of ultra-low-dose whole-body CT as an alternative to conventional skeletal surveys in children with suspected physical abuse. The research focuses on optimising CT protocols to minimise radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic image quality and explores current clinical practice and professional perspectives on the use of CT in this setting. The project aims to determine whether advances in low-dose CT technology could improve fracture detection, streamline imaging pathways, and support safer and more effective assessment of children with suspected physical abuse.
Project Title: Evaluating Automatic Patient Centring in Computed Tomography: Impacts on Radiation Dose, Image Quality, and Workflow Efficiency
Summary: My PhD project evaluates automatic patient centring in CT, focusing on how 3D camera- and AI-assisted positioning can improve centring accuracy, optimise radiation dose and image quality, and enhance workflow efficiency. This addresses the persistent problem of patient off-centring in routine CT and aims to generate evidence for safer, more consistent and efficient imaging practice. I am a senior CT radiographer at King Abdullah Medical City and PhD researcher at University College Cork, with research interests in CT optimisation, artificial intelligence, radiation protection, image quality and patient-centred care.
