28 Feb 2025

On 24th February 2025, Niamh Guiry, PhD Scholar and Assistant Lecturer at the UCC School of Law, took part in a high-level panel discussion on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Dublin City.

The event ‘High-Level Panel: How Driving Climate Action Can Accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals’ was organised by the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative and a number of partners including University of Galway, Oxfam, and Friends of the Earth. Chaired by Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, the event critically explored the impact of fossil fuels on the progression of the SDGs and Ireland’s responsibility to take immediate action towards renewable energy and to achieve just transitions in the energy sector.

Niamh contributions included insights from her PhD research exploring the relationship between international environmental law and the SDGs alongside perspectives on ongoing Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-related developments and campaigns in the Irish context as a member of the grassroots environmental group Not Here Not Anywhere.

The panel featured representatives from Irish Doctors for the Environment, the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, Concern Worldwide, and Asian Peoples’ Movement on Debt and Development.

Niamh’s PhD research is supervised by Professor Owen McIntyre and Dr Dug Cubie and is jointly funded by a Taighde Éireann-Research Ireland and the Environmental Protection Agency postgraduate scholarship.
