Publication of 'Reading and Writing Pathways through Children's and Young Adult Literature: Exploring literacy, identity and story with authors and readers'

Combining author, teacher and learner perspectives this newly published Routledge text (August, 2022) by Dr Alicia Curtin, reimagines literacy, learning and pedagogy as collaborative and sociocultural activities extending beyond traditional understandings of reading, writing and text. ‘Reading and Writing Pathways’ offers a theoretical framework and toolkit for teaching literacy through Children’s and Young Adult literature, providing practical examples, teaching aids, sample classroom activities and pedagogical approaches throughout. International and award-winning Children’s and Young Adult literature authors share their own experiences and understandings of reading and writing alongside practical advice and creative activities for learners engaging with literacy, reading and writing in the classroom and beyond.

Exploring a number of themes (including multimodality; aesthetic literacy; storied inquiry; arts, culture and identity; literacy as personal and social practice; affinity spaces; reading and writing for pleasure; digital literacy; story communities; fan fiction and remix; critical literacy; social justice; historical literacy; culturally sustaining pedagogies; funds of knowledge and popular culture; Philosophy for Children; sharing dark stories and experience; and Mental Health literacy and wellbeing) this text develops creative and innovative story centred pedagogies for engaging with reading and writing in primary and post primary classrooms. Literature, related pedagogies and sample activities are identified for a wide variety of text types such as picture books, graphic novels, comic books, fairy tales, novels, verse novels, (auto)biography, poetry, parody, drama, historical fiction, narrative non-fiction, film, performance and challenging and controversial texts and can be adapted to any age group ranging from the early years to young adult.
