UCC Awards Medicine and Health Employment-based PhD Scholarship to Anne Barrett

The School of Clinical Therapies is delighted to announce that Anne Barrett has been awarded the 2026 College of Medicine and Health Employment-based PhD Scholarship for Health Science Professionals.
Beginning her PhD this October under the supervision of Dr Helen Kelly (Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences), Anne will undertake a research project titled Mental Health Assessment, Prevention and Support in People with Communication Difficulties Post-Stroke (MAPS-COMMS). The study will explore how mental health difficulties are identified, experienced and supported following stroke, with a particular focus on people living with acquired communication difficulties, including aphasia.
Anne will be supported by a strong multidisciplinary research team, reflecting the collaborative nature of the project. Alongside Dr Helen Kelly, the supervisory team includes Dr
Fiadhnait O'Keeffe from the School of Applied Psychology and
Dr Emma Gleeson from our Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. Employment mentors for the project are Dr Marcia Ward, Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist with the Stroke Service at CUH, and Dr Patrick Barry, Consultant in Stroke Medicine at CUH.
