We are delighted to welcome Dr Marc Fabri to UCC to give the 2020 Quercus Academic Lecture.

Marc has played a significant role in the development of supports and understanding for HE students on the autistic spectrum internationally, including leading the Autism&Uni project, which lead to the development of Best Practice Guides to support HE students on the autism spectrum (available to download at this link), which are available in 7 languages and used widely across European universities.

Marc currently supports a number of universities (including UCC) with adopting the Autism&Uni toolkit, a self-help resource autistic students can use to manage the often difficult transition into higher education.

He is the Project Leader for the IMAGE project - an Erasmus+ funded strategic partnership of 5 Higher Education Institutions from 5 European countries. It is about supporting autistic university students to appreciate and demonstrate their strengths to employers. The acronym IMAGE stands for Improving EMployability of Autistic Graduates in Europe. The aim is to move away from a deficit model of autism and instead focuses on skills development, self-advocacy and the sharing good support practice amongst universities and employers.

Marc's research is centred around participatory design methods, applied to the field of assistive and enabling technologies to help people lead healthier and happier lives. He uses Design Thinking methods to develop ideas that bring about positive change and innovation. Marc has published on design methodology, the use of technology for positive behaviour change, barriers and enablers for autistic HE students, and the technology preferences of autistic people.
