Cork hosts International Knowledge Exchange Event of PAAR-Net, the European COST Action focused on Participatory Approaches with Older Adults

In June 2026, staff members in the School of Applied Social Studies, Dr Margaret Buckley, Dr Conor Cashman and Professor Eleanor Bantry White with support from Nicole McDonagh and Niamh O’Shea from UCC Academy, and Claire Fennell, Digital Education Officer in the School, organised the 3rd International Knowledge Exchange Event of PAAR-Net, the European COST Action focused on Participatory Approaches with Older Adults.

Researchers and older co-creators from more than 30 countries convened in Cork to explore the most pressing issues facing ageing societies. 100 participants were welcomed in person with additional delegates joining online.

The two-day conference highlighted the growing importance of participatory approaches that involve older adults directly in shaping research, policy and practice across health, care and support settings. Discussions focus on inclusion, innovation and achieving meaningful real-world impact for ageing communities.

Participants discussed some of the most pressing issues facing ageing societies, including new technologies, health and care systems, dementia care, participatory research practices, and co-creation with older adults. The programme showcased collaborative research initiatives that support social innovation and inclusive decision-making.
