In July, Project Officer, Abhisweta Bhattacharjee, was pleased to support TRANSLATE final-year PhD candidate, Rupa Ranjani Palanisamy, at  The Advanced Materials Show, The Advanced Ceramics Show and Battery Cells & Systems Expo in Birmingham. Read on to learn more about this strategic opportunity for the TRANSLATE project.

The Advanced Materials Show brought leaders in materials innovation and energy storage together. It was a strategic opportunity for the TRANSLATE project to connect with potential collaborators, industry stakeholders, and a wider audience invested in sustainable energy technologies.

Rupa presented her poster on high-capacity supercapacitors developed as part of TRANSLATE’s pioneering work in low-grade waste heat capture and conversion. UCC Academy played a key role in ensuring that this research reached the right people - both online and in person.

Strategic Science Communication

In preparation for the Advanced Materials Show, UCC Academy developed a targeted communication plan to build awareness of Rupa’s participation and to generate interest in TRANSLATE’s research. This included carefully scheduling tailored social media content and online videos showcasing Rupa’s research focus and broader project goals. One online promotion quickly reached over 5,000 people on LinkedIn. Engagements like these ensured TRANSLATE had visibility beyond the event floor, expanding its impact and demonstrating its relevance to ongoing discussions in sustainable energy and advanced materials.

In-Person Networking and Dissemination

At the show, Abhisweta supported direct engagement with TRANSLATE by facilitating conversations with potential collaborators, explaining the project’s broader applications, and providing on-the-spot summaries of Rupa’s research to non-technical audiences.

Abhisweta took the opportunity to introduce the TRANSLATE factsheet to interested attendees from industry and academia, and of course, to capture event highlights and insights for future communications and impact reporting.

This combination of real-time networking and content strategy helped connect TRANSLATE’s work with decision-makers in the materials and energy sector - a key step toward real-world application and impact.

The Bigger Picture: Why Science Communication Matters

Science dissemination and stakeholder engagement are essential elements of EU-funded research projects. Communicating outcomes effectively ensures public accountability, maximises the reach of innovation, and fosters cross-sector collaboration. Horizon Europe and similar funding programmes place increasing emphasis on:

  • Accessibility of scientific knowledge
  • Engagement with non-specialist audiences
  • Demonstrable pathways to impact

UCC Academy is proud to provide tailored support that helps researchers translate complex science into clear value - not only meeting these EU expectations but truly connecting science with society.

Well done to Rupa and Abhi on a successful show.
