Quick Fire Five - Jenny Keane, Project Officer

In March we sat down with Jenny Keane, Project Officer at UCC Academy for a five minute chat about her work, a typical day and who she would invite to a dinner party!
Jenny, can you walk us through a typical working day?
“I’m up at 6am, our two demanding dogs make sure of that. Bubba, our Jack Russell, is nearly six, and Nova, our rescue Beagle, loves scavenging city-centre streets for leftover chips and curry. Unfortunately, Nova is just not quick enough.
“At work, I meet with students assisting with the HEA Space Utilisation Survey before diving into my favourite task; data analysis. I love Excel, the crazier the rules and brighter the colours, the better. After work, I cook dinner, then unwind with my latest hobby, crochet, while watching Yellowstone, pure perfection.”

Do you enjoy crafting?
“I do. My mother taught me knitting and sewing, although she never crocheted. I recently learned that my grandmother, whom I never met, was an incredible crocheter. Since my dad passed away last year, it feels special to carry on that legacy from his family.”
What led you to join UCC Academy?
“I was at a career crossroads, having worked in supply chain in a previous role and more recently in fundraising at The Everyman. A friend recommended the Project Centre, and I’m so glad I applied, it’s the perfect role for me. The variety of projects, the supportive and dynamic team, and the learning opportunities have been fantastic.”
What have you learned since joining?
“I’ve become more flexible and open to change. I’m now comfortable learning on the go and adapting my approach as needed.”
What advice would you give a graduate interested in becoming a project officer?
“Consider your skillset, problem-solving is key. Our team comes from such diverse backgrounds, which proves there’s no single path into this field of project management.”
If you weren’t a project officer, what would you be?
“The younger me dreamed big, artist, fashion designer, even a West End star! But now, I appreciate structure and stability. That said, I might just become a “Dogamanager” for my fabulous dogs and make my millions.”
You’re hosting a fancy dinner party, who’s invited, and what’s on the menu?
- Taylor Swift
- Nigella Lawson
- Kendrick Lamar (admittedly, to understand the feud with Drake)
- Hugh Wallace
- Gizelle Bryant (Real Housewives of Potomac) please don't judge me
I’d serve my foolproof roast chicken with homemade gravy and triple-cooked roast potatoes. A top tip - flour and piping-hot oil make all the difference.
