Discover how Jonathan’s diverse background, from top agencies to the culinary world, shapes his creative vision and drives impactful design at UCC Academy.
Jonathan, Design Lead at the Academy, brings a wealth of experience from diverse roles — including time in advertising agencies and even a stint as a chef. Known for his appreciation of a good cliché, Jonathan counts the UCC Brand Project as his favourite work at the Academy. Recently, he sat down to talk all things graphic design. Read on to discover more about his creative journey.
How did you come to be Design Lead at UCC Academy?
As the saying goes, Cork is small. I had previously worked with a few people who had moved into UCC Academy, and when the Graphic Design role came up, I jumped at the opportunity, and I’m delighted I applied; I’ve never looked back. I have quite a varied background, having worked in one of Ireland’s largest agencies, in print, a PR agency, and even as a chef, so I was excited to expand my skill set even further.
What’s been your favourite project to work on so far, and why?
My favourite project so far is one that’s still ongoing: the UCC Brand Project. The scope, the reach, the mix of work, and the positive impact it’s having on UCC are all incredibly exciting. I’m really enjoying the chance to consolidate the external view of the university and help improve what was previously a very fragmented picture and set of voices.
We now have a more unified and consistent voice, which will strengthen our profile, enhance our rankings, and support our reputation on the international stage. I’ve also been lucky to work with an incredible team across the Office of Marketing and Impact, Buildings and Estates, under the steerage of Vice President Global Engagement, Professor Ursula Kilkelly.
What does a typical day look like for you (if such a thing exists)?
Like most people, there’s no such thing as a typical day and honestly, that’s my favourite part of the job. I love not knowing what each day or week will bring, it keeps me on my toes and helps me focus. Stress is for bridges; I have two hands, one keyboard, and yes, I really do love my clichés. In all seriousness, when you get to work with intelligent and dedicated people every day, it’s impossible not to enjoy it.

What’s something about your job that might surprise people?
My job isn’t really about drawing nice pictures or making colourful documents. I’d say around 60% of my role is stakeholder management, bringing people on the journey, educating them, and helping them see the best way to present their project.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My father passed away in 2025, so I’ve been thinking of him a lot. His words, “whatyougonnado,” keep ringing in my ears. You either do it, or you don’t. Simple as that.
You’re hosting a dinner party, who’s coming and what’s on the menu?
Prince, Bridget Riley, and Stefan Sagmeister. (You might have to look up two of them!). What’s on the menu? A vegetarian feast of course!
