Congratulations to fourth year Microbiology student Ayomide Ajani who is this year's winner of The Mary Mulvihill Award, a science media competition for third-level students that commemorates the legacy of science journalist and author Mary Mulvihill (1959–2015). Ayomide won the top prize for a digital essay exploring the future of energy using science fiction literature. She is the first UCC student to win the award.

Seven UCC projects have been awarded a combined €5,464,481 in the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Frontiers for the Future programme. Funding of these research projects will address researcher funding gender imbalance and supporting researchers returning from leave.

Siyuan Ye, a PhD student from Dr Guangbo Hao's CoMAR group in the School of Engineering and Architecture, has won the Best Student Paper Award at the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM) 6th Conference on Mechanisms, Transmissions and Applications in France.

Three UCC students have received Eli Lilly Awards for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at a special ceremony in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

Two projects from graduates of the Master of Architecture Course at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education (UCC/Munster Technological University) have been shortlisted for the prestigious EU Mies van der Rohe “Young Talent Architecture Award” (YTAA).

The world has a water quality problem, and UCC’s GEMS/Water CDC (Global Environmental Monitoring System for Water’s Capacity Development Centre) is at the forefront of addressing the issue.

UCC celebrated the successes and achievements of students and staff of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) at the annual UCC STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Awards held on 16 May. 

Thermo Fisher Scientific has awarded a UCC student with the first Thermo Fisher Scientific Prize in Organic Chemistry. Fourth year Chemistry student Ciara Millerick was presented with the inaugural award at the Annual UCC STEM Awards ceremony which took place at Devere Hall, UCC.

UCC Chemistry graduate Dr Niamh O'Mahoney has been named as the 2022 recipient of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (ICI) Postgraduate Award. This is the first time a UCC candidate has won the award since its creation in 2018.

The School of Mathematical Sciences and the School of Computer Science and Information Technology have received Athena SWAN Bronze Awards for positive gender practice in higher education.
