Overview
A two-hour voice workshop designed to support academics in impactful and healthy use of the voice in teaching and presenting environments as part of their professional development.
As an academic, communication is a major part of the role, and how we use our voices is fundamental to our ability to communicate with clarity, ease and impact with different audiences. This workshop will explore with participants what can get in the way of us using our voices well - anxiety, stress, nerves, or lack of skill or experience in voice production.
We will examine the mechanics of the voice - breath, resonance and articulation - to understand the connection between these elements. We will also look at ways to prepare ourselves to speak in public arenas, at conferences and larger events, enhancing our ease and our vocal presence.
The workshop will:
- empower participants to have more impact in teaching spaces, with clearer more engaging lectures, tutorials and teaching forums
- equip people with the tools to speak on platforms at conferences and presentation events
- share techniques for managing ‘performance anxiety’ and stress with public speaking
- provide people with activities for warming and readying the voice for the maintenance of vocal health and to reduce strain on vocal apparatus
- enable people to be able to communicate more impactfully in interviews, pitches and in media appearances
