The occasion will be the annual Diarmuid Whelan Memorial Lecture. Diarmuid was a brilliant scholar and a popular teacher in the School of History, but he died tragically at the age of 37. He had wide interests in Irish, international and intellectual history and published extensively on Conor Cruise O'Brien and Peter Tyrrell.

Professor Heather Jones is a most fitting speaker to deliver this year's annual memorial lecture. She is a specialist on war cultures, World War I, Ireland in revolution and war, and Weimar Germany. She is a prolific historian producing high quality research such as 'Violence Against Prisoners of War in the First World War in Britain, France and Germany 1914-1920' (Cambridge University Press, 2011). She has edited two sections of Cambridge University Press's 'History of the First World War' (2014), and she is a contributor to 'The Atlas of the Irish Revolution' (2017). Her forthcoming monograph on the British monarchy and the First World War is due out with Cambridge University Press.
