Stephen Roddy appears in the Wire, IEEE Spectrum & Sonic Field

"Dog Looking at and Listening to a Phonograph, 'His Master's Voice', The Original RCA Music Puppy Dog Logo Symbol for Advertising" by Beverly & Pack is licensed under CC BY 2.0.

Radical Humanities Laboratory researcher Stephen Roddy pens article on machine listening and sonic surveillance for The Wire magazine and sits down with IEEE Spectrum for a talk about his research in sonification, with further editorial coverage in Sonic Field.

Listening After Palantir explores how machine listening is transforming environmental sound into data points in increasingly global infrastructures designed for surveilance and control. It links this trend to earlier work in acoustic ecology and contextualises it in terms of the Machine Listening platform's Environments 12.

The article appears in the October 2026 issue of The Wire as part of it's Against the Grain series is available to read online here: https://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/collateral-damage/against-the-grain-listening-after-palantir

While Roddy's research critically examines the transformation of sound into data for surveillance purposes, his work in sonification explores the reverse process: converting data into sound to reveal otherwise hidden patterns and dynamics within that data and the systems that produce it.

He recently sat down with IEEE Spectrum to talk about his sonification work from an engineering perspective: https://spectrum.ieee.org/data-sonification-stephen-roddy

The interview received further editorial coverage in popular sound studies platform Sonic Field: https://sonicfield.org/sonification-is-a-data-language
