Dr Katie Togher presents a review of First Trimester Hospital Termination of Pregnancy Service at THEconf23
Dr Katie Togher recently presented her work on “First Trimester Termination of Pregnancy in Ireland: a retrospective review of the first three years of service at one tertiary maternity unit” at the Trinity Health and Education International Research Conference (THEconf2023).
The Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018, came into legislation on January 1st, 2019. Under Section 12 of this Act, pregnant women less than 12 weeks’ gestation can avail of termination of pregnancy (TOP) services without restriction nationally.
As part of her academic internship, Dr Togher conducted a retrospective medical chart review of patients that underwent early termination of pregnancy (< 12 weeks’ gestation) at Cork University Maternity Hospital from 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2021 inclusive. This project was conducted in collaboration with Dr Deirdre Hayes-Ryan, Dr Sara Leitao and Professor Keelin O’Donoghue.
The conference was held at Trinity College Dublin from 07-09 March 2023 and was well attended by nurses, midwives and allied heath professionals.
