Dr James Barry’s Legacy and A Tale of Three Cities Conference
For over two centuries, the Caesarean Section has transformed maternal and neonatal care, reflecting the evolution of surgical skill, medical knowledge, and patient-centered practice. Understanding its history offers valuable insights into both medicine and the individuals who shaped it.
200 Years of Caesarean Section – Dr James Barry's Legacy and A Tale of Three Cities brought together colleagues and experts to explore the history, practice and evolving understanding of Caesarean section through the remarkable story of Dr James Barry.
Held from 24–26 June 2026, this unique international meeting took place across Cork, Edinburgh and Cape Town, with one in-person conference day in each city. Participants attended their local meeting in person while joining the sessions from the other two cities online, creating a shared learning experience that connected all three locations.
The conference celebrated Dr James Barry's enduring legacy, encouraged international collaboration, and provided a platform for sharing historical perspectives, clinical expertise and contemporary research on Caesarean section.
