The NPEC Study Day 2027 will bring together healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, students, service users and other stakeholders to share evidence, experiences, innovations and learning that can inform and improve care throughout the maternity journey.
Abstract Call
We invite abstract submissions for oral and digital poster presentations at our forthcoming NPEC Study Day, “Evidence and Learning from Care Before, During and After Birth,” taking place in Galway.
We welcome submissions that showcase research, clinical practice, quality improvement, service evaluation, education, innovation and lived experience. We are particularly interested in work that translates evidence into practice, shares meaningful learning and contributes to safe, effective, equitable and compassionate care for women, babies and families.

NPEC Study Day: Friday, 15th January 2027
Abstract call opening: Friday, 30th October 2026
Abstract submission deadline: Friday, 27th November 2026
Abstract notification of acceptance: Friday, 4th December 2026
Digital poster and oral presentation submission deadline: Friday, 18th December 2026
All abstracts will be reviewed by the organising committee for relevance to the study day theme, clarity, quality and potential contribution to practice and learning.
We look forward to receiving your submissions and welcoming colleagues to Galway to share the evidence, experiences and insights that can shape and improve care before, during and after birth.
Care Before Birth: Antenatal care, screening, risk assessment, pregnancy complications, maternal health and wellbeing, fetal medicine and antenatal education.
Care During Birth: Intrapartum care, caesarean section, postpartum haemorrhage, obstetric emergencies, critical care in obstetrics, registered home births and safe birth practices.
Care After birth: Postnatal care, neonatal care, breastfeeding, maternal recovery, neonatal outcomes, therapeutic hypothermia and postnatal support.
Clinical Audit, Quality & Safety: Clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, perinatal mortality, severe maternal mobidity, maternity outcomes, the Robson Ten-Group Classification System and patient safety initiatives.
Learning from Experience: Learning from adverse events, clinical audit findings, maternal and perinatal mortality reviews, patient and family experiences, staff experiences, service-user feedback and implementing recommendations.
Innovation, Research & Education: Research projects, innovative clinical practices, education and training initiatives, simulation training, evidence-based practice, data-driven improvements and service developments.
Who can submit?
We welcome abstracts from midwives, obstetricians, neonatologists, nurses, allied health professionals, researchers, educators, students, service users and colleagues from all disciplines involved in care before, during and after birth.
Submissions from multidisciplinary teams and collaborative projects are particularly encouraged. We also welcome work in progress, where meaningful findings or learning are available to share.
You may submit your abstract for consideration as an oral presentation, a poster presentation, or both.
Multiple abstract submissions are welcome. Following the review process, each presenter will be invited to deliver a maximum of one presentation, either oral or poster.
Abstracts should be structured under the following headings, as appropriate:
Title
Background and rationale
Aim or objectives
Methods or approach
Results or key learning
Conclusion and implications for practice
Abstracts should clearly communicate the purpose of the work, the approach taken, the main findings or learning, and its relevance to care before, during or after birth.

The NPEC Study Day 2026 event provided updates from the NPEC on key developments across the work over the past few years. The programme focused on data collection tools implemented across a range of specialised services, including perinatal mental health and diabetes care.
The day featured updates from collaborators, including Dr Aenne Helps (CUMH PROMPT), Majella Daly (National Centre for Clinical Audit), and Clare Kennedy (NWIHP National Survey on Infant Feeding Support Services).
Updates on definitions, ongoing and emerging research projects, as well as NPEC’s public and patient engagement activities was shared with attendees.
A detailed demonstration was given on the navigation of NPEC's website and how social media channels are being used as dissemination tools that help to support learning, engagement, and impact in practice.
