Alongside the scientific programme, the "200 Years of Caesarean Section – Dr James Barry’s Legacy and A Tale of Three Cities" conference included a series of social events designed to bring together delegates, speakers and colleagues across the three locations.

These gatherings provided opportunities for informal discussion, networking and connection, allowing everyone to share experiences and build relationships beyond the conference sessions.

From the pre-conference gathering at the Glucksman Gallery in Cork to the conference dinner at Blackrock Castle, the social programme reflected the spirit of collaboration and community that shaped this unique conference.

Pre-conference event – Glucksman Art Gallery, University College Cork, Ireland

This event marked the opening of the 200 Years of Caesarean Section – Dr James Barry’s Legacy and A Tale of Three Cities conference.

Set within the gallery space, the event explored the life and work of Dr James Barry, one of Ireland’s most significant historical medical figures, through invited contributions, visual engagement, and discussion. The programme considered Barry’s medical legacy, cultural and artistic contexts, and how his life and work have been interpreted over time.

The event included:

• a self-guided tour of the Glucksman Gallery
• a wine reception
• invited contributions from Dr Michael Waldron (Crawford Art Gallery) and Claire Ó Nualláin (Courtauld Institute, London)

The reception was accompanied by a special guest cellist, who performed live throughout the evening.

A guided historical walking tour of Cork city offered to in-person attendees by Dr Tom Spalding.

Tom has led historical walking tours of the city for over fifteen years.
