Matt Cooper and Peter Feeney among speakers at Journalism Conference

Today FM presenter Matt Cooper, winner of UCC's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2015, is among the speakers at this Thursday's UCC Journalism Conference and will broadcast his show live from campus.

Today FM presenter Matt Cooper and Press Ombudsman, Peter Feeney, are among the speakers set to appear atUCC Journalism Society’s conference this Thursday (February 9). 

Focused on Politics and the Media and the Future of the Media, the ninth edition of the annual UCC Journalism Conference will take place at Council Chambers, located in the North Wing of the Quad, UCC.

Speakers will include former politician and Green Party leader John Gormley; Dr Laurence Davis, College Lecturer and Director of the PhD in Government, UCC; Richard Barrett, co-founder and COO of sports media company Pundit Arena; and Irish Examiner journalist Michael Clifford. Speakers will discuss issues including conflict and investigative reporting, the Eighth Amendment, and the decriminalisation of drugs in Ireland.

Topaz Shrestha, Conference Convener and second Arts student in UCC said: “We are excited to host such a diverse range of speakers in UCC. These speakers are perfectly situated to discuss and debate these topics, and what they will say will no doubt make for a topical and interesting debate.”

“UCC’s Journalism Society has a strong tradition of preparing students for careers in media and we hope that students and others alike will take the opportunity to engage in these debates on core issues in today’s media landscape.”

Dr Catherine O'Sullivan, a lecturer in criminal law at UCC, and Dr Finola Doyle–O'Neill, broadcast historian and History lecturer at UCC will chair both panels.

Free to attend and open to all, the conference will take place from 9:00-15:00, with the Politics and the Media panel scheduled to run from 9:30-12:00 and the Future of the Media panel from 13:00-15:00. Register your interest in attending: journalism@uccsocieties.ie.
