EU ranking success for UCC

30 Mar 2017

University College Cork (UCC) scored top marks across five core areas ranked in the EU-sponsored U-Multirank published today (Thursday, March 30, 2017).

U-Multirank is the most comprehensive ranking system internationally as it judges university performance on 35 indicators across five core areas which are marked from ‘1’ (very good) to ‘5’ (weak).  The areas ranked include Teaching, Research, Knowledge Transfer, International Orientation and Regional Engagement.   UCC received 13 ‘1’s and 13 ‘2’s which resulted in the University being awarded 26 high scores (or 74%) out of a possible 35.

The 2017 edition of U-Multirank presents data on almost 1,500 institutions from 99 countries and more than 2,500 departments/faculties in the 2017 subjects.

The University’s achievement in the U-Multirank follows other recent successes with the UCC being named The Sunday Times University of the Year 2017 for the second time in a row, the only Irish university to have achieved this. UCC is the University of the Year for the fifth time in the history of the guide, which was first published in 2002. The University follows up its triumphs in 2003, 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2016.  In the recently published QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 UCC increased its number of subjects that feature in the top tier of QS Subject rankings to 16, up six from 2011 and up two since last year.  UCC’s Schools of Nursing & Midwifery and Pharmacy & Pharmacology have been ranked in the top 100 in the subject rankings.

UCC has also been ranked twelfth in the world in a list of the world's most sustainable universities, achieving the highest result in Ireland. Universitas Indonesia (UI) released its UI GreenMetric Rankings of World Universities 2016, having measured the commitment made by over 400 universities across the globe in developing an ‘environmentally-friendly’ infrastructure.

UCC President, Professor Patrick O’Shea says:

“UCC’s staff and students should be delighted with this U-Multirank result for the University as it reflects our commitment to giving our students a great education and preparing them for the world in which they will live. It also highlights our world-class research, our close partnership with industry, and the entrepreneurial spirit that has seen the university develop many spin-off companies,” he said.
