Ireland’s First Lady of musical theatre Rebecca Storm is set to perform at A Summer’s Evening on the Quad at UCC, the annual outdoor concert which has raised over €500,000 for charities, on July 16.

Storm has taken on some of the most demanding roles in musical theatre over the past 30 years, from Eva Peron in Evita and Fantine in Les Misérables to Grizabella in Cats and Miss Hannigan in Annie.

Her career has been on an upward trajectory since she performed her hit single Putting on the Show on Top of the Tops in 1985, since winning a string of awards for albums including Ovation, a tribute to the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The magical night-time setting of UCC’s iconic Quad will be filled with the sound of music and a 2000-strong audience for the 11th edition of the fully-seated event, with the line-up also set to feature Michael McCarthy with the Band of An Garda Síochána led by Insp. Pat Kenny and Linda Kenny (programme director). Gerald Kean will return as the MC for this not-to-be-missed event, this year themed An Evening at the Proms.

“We started the concert as a community charity event between UCC and Community Policing Barrack St (now the Bridewell), hoping to have one every five years but it just took off! To date, it has generated over €500,000 in the last ten years, with 100% of the funding given to the charities,” said Pat Cotter, the event co-founder and UCC General Services Officer.

“This is down the fact that we have such great sponsors who have supported the event year after year, fantastic acts willing to give up their time, and UCC staff and management who have supported us.”

The key to all charity events is down to the paying public, he stressed, adding that “the Cork people in particular have been central to our success. We would not have made it to the 11th year without them. We are lucky to be able to work with an incredibly dedicated committee of volunteers over the past 11 years whose commitment and determination has grown each year.”

Tickets, costing €30 each, are on sale from UCC Visitors' Centre (021 490 1876), Pro Musica (021 427 1659), Cork Association for Autism (021 4533642 or on Eventbrite), Carrigaline Lions Youth Centre (087-2307144) and The Everyman (021-4501673 and EverymanCork.com)

This year’s event will support the Children's Leukaemia Association, Cork Association for Autism, Cork Life Centre, Cork Penny Dinners and the Disability Support Service, UCC. The sponsors of this year’s event are Cork University Business School, The River Lee Hotel, the Evening Echo and Cork's 96FM.
