QS top 50 for UCC’s Nursing and Midwifery
UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery has been ranked in the top 50 nursing schools worldwide in the international QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016 published today (22/3/16).
UCC has increased its number of subjects that feature in the top tier of QS Subject rankings to 14, up four from 2011 and up one since last year. The excellent performance of University College Cork in these Rankings along with the recent award of The Sunday Times University of the Year 2016 reinforces UCC’s leading position in Irish education.
The 14 UCC subject areas that are now in the top 300 of QS Rankings by Subject include:

In response to the entry of the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery into the Subject Rankings for the first time, Professor Eileen Savage of the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery said:
“I am delighted with our placement in the top 50 of nursing schools worldwide – it is a recognition of the efforts of our lecturers, administrative and professional/technical staff to give a first rate education, research experience and support to our national and international students. Demand for places on our courses has been growing for the past 10 years and we are proud of our first class teaching resources, exemplified by our state of the art clinical simulation resource centre and our close partnerships with Ireland's largest and foremost teaching hospitals.”
The School offers an undergraduate programme in four branches of nursing: general, integrated children’s and general, intellectual disability and mental health, and also an undergraduate programme in midwifery. In addition, a range of postgraduate, clinical specialist, advanced practitioner programmes, and doctorate programmes are offered, all delivered by our academic staff who are leading experts in their fields. The School is now open to inquiries about two new online programmes scheduled to commence in September 2016 – BSc in Nursing and Healthcare Quality Improvement and MSc in Nursing and Healthcare Quality Improvement.

The UCC School of Education has entered the Subject Rankings and is now listed in the top 300. On hearing the news the Head of School, Dr Fiachra Long commented:
“I am delighted that Education has now entered the top 300 tier of QS Rankings by Subject. It is a fitting tribute to the splendid work of the School and the many dedicated and experienced lecturers, supervisors, mentors and supporting schools who combine to support new and in-career teachers. It is also appropriate during this decade of commemorations to note the role played by Professor Elizabeth O Sullivan, appointed as the first Chair of Methods of Education in 1910. One hundred years later, the School of Education is an acclaimed resource in the on-going professional development of teachers and has specialised programmes in Leadership, Special Educational Needs, Early Childhood Education, and Sports Education as well as internationally commended research in Science Education and Foundational Studies.”
UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy welcomed the good news, which follows UCC’s outstanding performances as University of the Year in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 and other international ranking systems.
- UCC was named ‘University of the Year’ in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016, with its performance in research income per academic leading the field.
- In the 2015 U-Multirank rankings UCC was the top performing university internationally, based on obtaining the highest number of ‘A’ scores – 21 out of 28.
- UCC’s efforts in the area of sustainability resulted in the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Greenmetric World University Ranking (2016) awarding a fourth in the world ranking
- In the CWTS Leiden Ranking Exercise (2015), which ranks 750 universities worldwide focusing on the top 1% most frequentlycited publications, UCC was recognized as one of the leading universities worldwide for research. UCC topped the ranking in Ireland, and now holds the 16th position in Europe and 52nd worldwide.
Dr Murphy commented: “Such performances demonstrate that University College Cork remains in an excellent position to compete both nationally and internationally. It enhances UCC’s reputation as an attractive option for study at all levels and assures employers that UCC’s alumni are work and world-ready”
