UCC camogie takes centre stage in Sunday's All-Ireland final

10 Sep 2021

Cork will meet Galway in the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Final this Sunday, and University College Cork will be well represented in Croke Park on the day.

No fewer than 13 players have a connection to UCC, many of them graduates, some students, and others are incoming students, but all have worn or will wear the famous skull and crossbones, and the majority have played Ashbourne Cup camogie.

UCC's historic Quad will be lit in red and white to show our support this weekend.

UCC graduates who played in the semi-final win over Kilkenny include Ellen Murphy (Sarsfields), Libby Coppinger (St Colum’s), Meabh Cahalane (St Finbarr's),  Hannah Looney (Killeagh), Katrina and Pamela Mackey (Douglas), Chloe Sigerson (Killeagh), Orla Cronin (Enniskeane) and Amy O'Connor (St Vincents).

Meanwhile students Laura Hayes (St Catherine’s), Fiona Keating (Coursey Rovers), Aisling Egan (St Finbarr's) and Emma Murphy (Glen Rovers) were also involved.

UCC will also be represented on the sideline. Coach Kevin Murray has worked with Billy Morgan on the three Sigerson Cup wins for UCC in 2011, 2014 and 2019.

UCC President John O’Halloran said:

"I want to wish all involved in Sunday's final the very best of luck, and to thank them for representing the skull and crossbones with distinction.

"I also want to thank all involved in UCC Sport for the contribution they have made towards the development of our athletes and players. This summer we have seen our students excel in the Olympics, Paralympics, Gaelic games and other sports and that speaks not just to their own hard work and dedication, but to the support they have received from UCC Sport."

Morgan Buckley Head of Sport & Physical Activity said:

“Everyone in UCC Sport is very proud of our players and how they represent UCC, their clubs, community and county and we wish them every success at the weekend”.

Christine O Donovan, Deputy Head of Sport & Physical Activity, said:

"It's great to see Cork contest this weekend's senior camogie final, and going for their 29th title. his will be Cork's last chance of senior success in the GAA world for 2021.

"Women’s sport has reached new heights in recent years and the profile of women’s sport on TV has also reached new heights. Sunday is the culmination of many months of work for the players and I wish each of them all the best in their endeavours to bring the cup back to Cork.

"UCC is proud of its GAA tradition and UCC is once again well represented on the Cork Panel. We are also proud in particular to have a long standing association with Cork camogie, providing training facilities for many years before they acquired their own grounds and developing students players through the UCC camogie club.”

John Grainger, Gaelic Games Development for UCC GAA Club said:

“We are very proud of the UCC connection with Sunday's final and that our best wishes go to the players and their management.”

The final will be broadcast live on RTÉ 2 on Sunday, throw-in is at 4:15.
