UCC academic inducted as a 2021 International Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering
Chair Professor of Electrical & Electronic Engineering Nabeel A. Riza of University College Cork (UCC), has been inducted as a 2021 International Fellow of The Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK’s National Academy of Engineering.
Prof. Riza was elected at a recent ceremony in London in recognition of his role a global prize-winning inventor of light-based technologies including the invention of the all-digital fault-tolerant fiber-optic equalizer deployed in the global internet.
He was one of four individuals selected for the International Membership honour which included a Presidential US National Medal of Technology & Innovation Laureate.

Sir Jim McDonald, President of the Academy stated: “Our Fellows represent the best of the best in the engineering world, and we welcome these 69 excellent and talented professionals to our community of business people, entrepreneurs, innovators and academics.”
The Royal Academy Membership includes Academy Honorary Fellow Lewis Hamilton who is a six-time Formula One Racing World Champion and recent International Fellows that include 2014 Physics Nobel Laureate Prof. Shuji Nakamura & former Stanford University President and computer pioneer Prof. John Hennessy.
UCC President Prof. John O'Halloran congratulated Prof. Riza on his recognition.

Prof. Riza commented that “ he is deeply humbled and honoured to receive this special international recognition that also brings prestige to UCC and Ireland.”
