The College of Medicine and Health, UCC today announced 38 students from the college have received an Undergraduate Quercus College Scholarship.  The scholarship acknowledges the academic achievement in a public way of students who achieved a First Class result in their subject in 2020. 

 

Each year Quercus nurtures a handful of minds, believed to have the potential to grow beyond all expectation.

 

This is a cause for acknowledgement and great celebration for the students, friends and family. Students from as far away as Ontario, Canada and Singapore received the scholarship, demonstrating the international reach of the College of Medicine and Health.

 

Prof. John O'Halloran Interim UCC President , said:

I would like to congratulate the 38 Quercus College Scholarship recipients from the College of Medicine and Health in what has been a hugely challenging year for them in the fight against Covid-19, and they are to be commended on this remarkable academic achievement."

"I would like to congratulate all 38 recipients across the entire College of Medicine and Health on their remarkable achievement of obtaining a First Class result in their subject in what has been a truly exceptional and challenging year for our students. The Quercus Programme provides opportunities that you normally wouldn't get at under-graduate level."

 

One talented recipient is Amy Brennan, a final year medical student in UCC. In March, Amy began working in the Emergency Department in Cork University Hospital as part of the front-line defence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her role initially involved preparing an equipment hub in the COVID section of the department, where she was responsible for introducing multiple quality improvement projects including the design of a COVID-specific resuscitation trolley and "grab bags" for the management of critically ill COVID patients.

 

These projects improved both treatment efficiency and staff safety throughout the first surge and subsequently, are still in use today. She was also awarded the Archer Gold Medal in Psychiatry earlier this year.

In the College of Medicine & Health, Quercus College Scholarships of €500 each, tenable for one year, are offered for competition based on the results of each of the Summer First, Second, Third and, where applicable, Fourth year university examinations in programmes offered by the College of Medicine & Health.
