UCC honours its sporting stars
UCC honoured its leading young sports stars at our annual Sports Star Awards last night, in what has been an incredible year for sport for the university.
120 attendees were on hand at a reception to recognise outstanding sporting performances from UCC athletes, in what is the 36th year of the annual awards, which recognise sporting achievement across all sports. UCC has one of the highest rates of student participation in sports clubs among Irish universities, with a combined membership of over 4,000 students in sportsclubs.
The first Sigerson-Fitzgibbon cup double in 31 years
“We have had a remarkable year with UCC sports clubs success to date, as the Sigerson, Fitzgibbon and Collingwood Cups all returned to Leeside for an unprecedented treble. Women’s soccer picked up the much coveted Kelly Cup, while volleyball had double success with the men’s & women’s team claiming Intervarsity titles. The women’s hockey team were Munster Senior Cup runners up. Rowing picked up the club 8 title at Irish Rowing Championship, as well as finishing 2nd in the London Metro Regatta” commented UCC’s Director of Sport and Physical Activity Morgan Buckley.

The awards were presented by Guest of Honour Mary O’Connor, CEO of Federation of Irish Sport. Mary Fitzgerald, a first year Quercus Sports Scholar, who three gold medals in the 2019 IWAS World Games for Javelin, Discus, and Shot-put was honoured. The performances of Chloe Sigerson on the camogie pitch were also recognised with an ‘All Star’ award, while Shane Conway’s stand out performance with the UCC Senior hurling team this year was recognised, as was Sean O’Shea, who has been a vital member of the UCC senior footballing team, that secured the Sigerson Cup and the Ryan Cup League title this year.
UCC completed the first Sigerson-Fitzgibbon cup double in 31 years this year, while earlier in the year UCC beat UL to take the Collingwood Cup to clinch their 14th win in the competition. The Mardyke, the home of sport and activity in UCC, celebrates its 300th anniversary in 2019, UCC has sported and played there since 1911.
