Cambridge honour for UCC academic
Claire Connolly, Professor of Modern English in UCC’s School of English has been appointed Parnell Fellow in Irish Studies at Cambridge University for the academic year 2018-2019.
The appointment is offered every year by Magdalene College, Cambridge University to a distinguished scholar or artist and is recruited by invitation.
The Fellowship is named in honour of Charles Stewart Parnell, who was a student of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The object of the Fellowship is to promote the study of Irish history, language, literature, culture and institutions, by giving a senior scholar space and access to the resources of Cambridge to pursue a project.
As part of the Fellowship, Professor Connolly will deliver the 2018 Charles Stewart Parnell Lecture at Cambridge University.
In taking up the post, Claire Connolly carries on a distinguished UCC tradition of research and scholarship in Irish Studies. The first Parnell Fellow was Professor Joseph Lee and recent fellows include Professor Clair Wills (Princeton), Professor Jane Ohlmeyer (TCD), Professor R.F. Foster (Oxford) and Professor Frank McGuinness (UCD).
Professor Connolly is a previous winner of the Donald J. Murphy Award for Distinguished First Book in Irish Studies, awarded by the American Conference for Irish Studies. She has received many invitations to lecture on Irish literature around the world and will give a keynote lecture at the 2018 meeting of the International Association for the Study of Irish Literature. Current research includes a book, Irish Romanticism, 1780-1845, to be published by Cambridge University Press. With Marjorie Howes (Boston College), she is General Editor of Irish Literature in Transition, a new six volume series under contract to Cambridge University Press.
