Shark jaws

Shark jaws (Ashley Bennison)

Sharks are part of an ancient lineage, in existence for over 400 million years. A fundamental reason for this continued perseverance is the fact that sharks are the ultimate predator, powerful swimmers with strong sensory perception, and of course incredible jaws.

There are two elements that contribute to their hunting prowess, the teeth and the jaws. As their sharp teeth break they are continuously replaced with new ones, lying in rows one behind another. Their jaw structure is also quite unique; in many animals the upper jaw is firmly attached to the skull. Not so in sharks; the upper jaw is not fused but instead attached with muscle ligaments and connective tissues. This heightened degree of mobility in the jaw-skull connection allows the shark to thrust its entire mouth forward when attacking prey.
