A Middleware System for Post-Deployment Self-Maintenance of Wireless Sensor Networks for Building Automation

Responsible:

Short Description:

This project is a collaborative project between the Mobile and Internet Systems Laboratory (MISL), which is part of the Department of Computer Science at University College Cork (UCC), and United Technologies Research Centre (UTRC) Ireland. MISL conducts research in the design and performance of computer networks and systems. UTRC Ireland is a research branch of United Technologies - industry leader in many areas including aerospace propulsion, heating and air conditioning, fire and security systems, power generation and building infrastructure and services. In that context, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are expected to play an important role in supporting intelligent access control, evacuation management, climate control, optimisation of energy use and lighting control.

Our aim is to design and evaluate a middleware system for WSNs that will embed intelligence into the network so as to facilitate post-deployment self-maintenance of inbuilding sensor systems. As WSN technology moves from the laboratory to commercial deployments, this feature will become highly significant. In the longer term, the project results will be valuable in large scale WSN experimental research facilities which require intelligent self-maintenance capabilities.
