"Listening to Silence: Villaurrutia's Exploration of Reality through Language"

Pernilla Vizard introduced the poetry of 20th century Mexican Xavier Villaurrutia. In his nocturnos the poet explores the limits of being and seeks to penetrate beyond. In this ambitious project his struggle with the limitations of linguistic expression becomes an integral part of the text. The talk focused on a reading of one poem which attempted to illustrate this and point to some of the creative ways in which Villaurrutia uses language.
