The Quire

A symposium on investigating an aspect of the materiality of the medieval manuscript.
This symposium, hosted by the McCarthy Multi-Spectral Imaging (McCarthy MSI) Project of the Department of Modern Irish, brings together scholars to explore the quire as a core unit in the structure of the manuscript.
Organised by McCarthy MSI, this symposium focuses on the quire as an important focal point in the study of manuscript production. Papers by John Gillis (TCD), Lea Pokorny (University of Iceland), and the McCarthy MSI team (Anna Hoffmann, Ginevra Marchetti, and Pádraig Ó Macháin), will examine the codicological and textual features underlying the concept of the quire. These talks seek to explore the quire’s materiality within the broader context of manuscript production, and to advance our understanding of one the practices that informed the history of the book down to modern times.
