The World’s First Professor of Celtic? Owen Connellan and Cork
One of the pioneering initiatives of the new Queen’s Colleges was the establishment of the world’s first professorships of the Celtic languages. This talk will look at QCC’s professor of Celtic, Owen Connellan (1797-1871), considering both his sometimes stormy relationship with the college administration, and his place in early Irish scholarship. The account of his life and career will be illustrated with passages from his published and unpublished writings.
