Tokyo Art School Professors visit UCC

Visit of Yoshitaka Mōri and Tomoko Shimizu (Tokyo University of the Arts) to Cork and UCC
Big thanks to Yoshitaka Mōri and Tomoko Shimizu (GEIDAI - Tokyo University of the Arts), joining us for two busy days of meetings this week with local artists and UCC colleagues, and discussions about the politics of contemporary art in East Asia and Europe. On Monday 29th September, after a morning meeting Cork-based artists at T-Junction, a regular social event at the Guesthouse art collective in Shandon, they presented two talks on 'Political controversy and censorship in contemporary art: The case of Documenta 15 and "anti-semitism"' at the Lab. Tuesday 30th . These analysed and unpicked the hysteria surrounding European reactions to alledged "anti-semitism" in controversial artworks by Indonesian artists at the famous art event in Germany, that have prevented properly decentred understandings of the post-World War II world from the point of view of subaltern locations in Asia. On Tuesday 30th September, we moved to The Glucksman, with a public event presenting Tomoko and Yoshi's selection of new artists and trends in Japanese contemporary since the triple earthquake disasters of March 2011. An audience of about 40 people from the city and university were fascinated by their narrative which emphasised how younger generations of artists are decisively embracing new radical philosophies of collectivism, feminism and post-human ecology. This talk was held in conjunction with the current exhibition RINN: An Ireland-Japan dialogue on making, place and time. Tomoko and Yoshi visited the show and discussed the works and the museum's future plans with the Glucksman curatorial team. Tokyo Geidai is the leading art school in Japan, and we are looking to develop further exchanges with students and staff in their MA in global curatorial arts practices, and their School of Music.
