School of Clinical Therapies Marks DLD Day 2026

16 Oct 2026
Happening On 16/10/2026
Our School proudly marked Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Day with a range of activities to raise awareness of a condition that affects approximately two children in every classroom and can have a significant impact on communication, learning and participation in everyday life.

As a School, we are committed to advancing research and knowledge in this area through the TICLD (Transforming Information on Communication and Language Development) project, which focuses on improving access to information and support relating to children's communication and language development. This commitment was also reflected in the participation of Dr Pauline Frizelle at the International Developmental Language Disorder Research Conference (IDLDRC), where she shared insights from her work and contributed to international discussions on advancing research and support for individuals with DLD.

A key highlight of this year's celebrations was the fantastic contribution of the Clinical Therapies Student Society, which organised a bake sale to raise awareness of DLD and support local schools. Thanks to the generosity of staff, students and visitors, an impressive €750 was raised for Greenmount National School.

The School was also proud to acknowledge the contribution of Senior Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy, Ciara O'Toole, who serves as the Irish Ambassador for DLD on the RADLD Ireland National Committee. Through her national advocacy work, Ciara plays a key role in raising awareness of developmental language disorder and promoting greater understanding and support for individuals with DLD and their families. To mark the occasion, the UCC Quad was illuminated in purple, joining a global movement to raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorder and show solidarity with individuals, families, educators and healthcare professionals affected by DLD.

The School of Clinical Therapies would like to thank everyone who supported this year's DLD Day initiatives. Together, these activities help build greater awareness of DLD and contribute to creating more inclusive communities for those living with developmental language disorder. To find out more about DLD please see the Raising Awareness for DLD website at https://radld.org/.
