3D printing PPE for community healthcare workers

30 Mar 2020

UCC Library is collaborating with BenchSpace Cork, a city-based creative community space. The library’s 3D printer will be used to print frames for face shields to be sent to community nurses and front-line healthcare workers.

When Benchspace Cork had to close down their workshop to the public, they decided to put this equipment to use creating Face Shields for Front Line Workers. To stop a potential bottleneck we also put out a call for other 3D printer owners to help us in creating these masks. In less than 48 hours over 35 people signed up to help. UCC Library was among them.

After establishing protocols, trialling various designs with healthcare professionals and establishing a distribution plan, the goal is to get 10,000 masks into the hands of health workers over the next 4 weeks.

GoFundMe page has been set up to support materials and distribution costs for this initiative.
