Year 4 students of the Complex Repetition studio group travel to Arles, France as part of their studies led by Tom Cookson of TRESTLE Over the last few days, fourth year students in CCAE's Complex Repetition studio group have been in Arles, southern France. We explored the remarkable Roman ruins which structure Arles's urban centre. As a counterpoint, we visited Atelier LUMA (by BC Materials and Assemble) on the periphery of the city centre. We understand architecture as part of a historical continuum, or, a sequence of complex repetitions. In this way, Henri Bergson speaks of 'duration' (1889), which he described as the 'persistence of the past in the present'. Students considered how these projects compliment each other in the way that they respond to this thinking. Both in their attitude to the durability and provenance of materials, and the spatial opportunities that can be afforded by their careful shaping, arrangement and deployment. The Complex Repetition studio is led by Tom Cookson of TRESTLE.
