Bridget Doyle: Expanding Education Access for Underrepresented Communities

6 Feb 2025

Bridget Doyle is dedicated to empowering the Travelling Community and advocating for long-term housing solutions and equality. Currently studying the Diploma in Youth and Community Work at Adult Continuing Education (ACE) at UCC, Bridget believes education is key to driving change. We caught up with Bridget ahead of International Women's Day to discuss her thoughts on the need for change, overcoming the challenges she faces as a Traveller, and how women can be better allies.

Can you tell us a little about the work you do and how you are connected to ACE?

My name is Bridget Doyle from Tipperary, I volunteer with Tipperary Rural Traveller Project which is dedicated to the empowerment and movement of The Travelling Community. I also work closely with CENA Culturally Appropriate Homes which is a Traveller led Approved Housing body that provides affordable accommodation to the Travelling Community. I am currently pursuing my diploma in Community and Youth Development delivered through the ACE programme here in UCC.

How do you see your work making an impact - locally, nationally and in your organisation?

My work with Tipperary Rural Traveller Project helps people realise their potential, supports self-determination, resilience and so much more. As an advocate for my community, I help impact the way Traveller Accommodation is delivered nationally and help provide long-term housing solutions for those in need.

What does equality in education and lifelong learning mean to you?

To me equality in education means the removal of barriers for the most socially disadvantaged and the understanding from education providers the need for multiple access routes as one system doesn’t accommodates everyone. Through the continued advancement on how education is delivered it ensures people can engage with lifelong learning at a level suited to them.

What progress have you seen in gender equality, and what challenges still remain?

There have been many advancements in gender equality, the delivery of part-time and ACE programmes ensures that women like me with a young family can participate in education and the workforce. However, there is still significant gaps in leadership roles economically and politically.

How can we all be better allies in supporting women?

By listening to the needs and ambitions that women have we can create more options that allows women to meaningfully participate in all areas of life. Encourage women to pursue their ambitions and help them realise their own potential.

Is there a woman who has inspired you in your career or personal journey?

I have four very special women in my life that inspire me everyday, my two amazing daughters, my mother and mother-in-law they have opened so many doors for me to go through and inspire me to open as many as I can. Professionally I must mention Margaret Casey who been an advocate for Travellers all her life, she has inspired and supported me in pursing my professional career and every other woman that has opened doors and created pathways to follow thank you.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to women pursuing their ambitions?

Believe in yourself and never give up. Have confidence in yourself and take every opportunity that comes your way. By encourage yourself to follow your dreams you don’t know what door you might open for you and the next generation of young women.
