Prof. Karsten Menzel
Biography
Professor Menzel has been appointed as Professor and Chair of Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (IT in AEC) at University College Cork, Ireland in 2006. He is the Director of the MEngSc. IT in AEC and the Informatics Research Unit for Sustainable Engineering (Cork). Professor Menzel is the coordinator of the EU-FP7 project CAMPUS21. Previously, he was the lead PI of the Strategic Research Cluster “Information Technology for Optimised Building Operation” (ITOBO) funded by Science Foundation Ireland (2007 to 2013).
From 2008 to 2010 Professor Menzel was Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Before his appointment at UCC Professor Menzel worked in different research and teaching positions at Technische Universitaet Dresden (Germany), Technische Universitaet Braunschweig, (Germany), and Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh. Prof. Menzel is a former Feodor Lynen Scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany.
Research Interests
Professor Menzel’s research interest focuses on Life-Cycle Management of Built Artefacts and multi-dimensional information management. Current research fields are in BIM (Building Information Modelling) and Building Performance Management and Evaluation. This work builds on earlier research focusing on integrated product modelling, collaborative work, process modelling and sustainable design.
Additionally, Prof. Menzel developed a secondary research interest in distributed learning and teaching with an emphasis on flexible infrastructure for teaching and learning.
Professional Activity
Professor Menzel is a member of the European Construction Technology Platform and the E2B group. He has served as
member of multiple Editorial Boards, Scientific Conference Committees. He chaired multiple workshops and conferences.
Professor Menzel received a Feodor Lynen Scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (CMU Pittsburgh). and a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (CMU Pittsburgh and Stanford University).
Teaching Activity
Professor Menzel is the Director of the MEngSc. IT in AEC. The Programme was honoured Best Irish Postgraduate Programme of the Year 2014 in the category Science and Engineering. Teaching activities include Computer Aided Facilities Management, Software Engineering, Information Modelling and Retrieval, Modelling and Visualisation, Building Diagnostics, and Virtual Enterprises.
Professor Menzel is a guest lecturer at the University of Maribor, Slovenia.
Before his appointment at UCC he lectured in Germany and the USA This included the coordination of a distributed design course.
