Geoscience
Geoscience research is an integral component of the School research portfolio, contributing to the shared research mission of the School, College and UCC. Geoscience researchers contribute to, and help coordinate, the SFI Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) as well as other national, European and international research programmes including 2 European Research Council grants and an IRC Laureate grant.
The Geoscience research strategy has placed emphasis on linking staff expertise with applied research whilst maintaining fundamental academic research. Key strengths include marine geology, hydrogeology, palaeobiology, igneous processes, structural geology, experimental petrology and geochemistry
We welcome applications from students to carry out postgraduate research at MSc, MRes or PhD level. Please contact a relevant staff member for more information:
Professor Andy Wheeler – marine geology
Professor Maria McNamara – palaeobiology
Dr Ed Jarvis – palynology and palaeoenvironments
Dr Kate Kiseeva – experimental petrology and geochemistry
Dr Chris Mays – palaeontology and mass extinctions
Dr Pat Meere – structural geology
Dr John Reavy – igneous processes and magma emplacement
Dr John Weatherill – contaminant hydrogeology and biogeochemistry
