Congratulations to Dr. Yvonne Nolan who was awarded >€600K to lead a European consortium project on Alzheimer's disease, Neuroinflammation and Gut Microbes under the Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (CoEN) programme.

The School of Medicine Annual Prizegiving Ceremony took place in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on Friday 16th Novenber 2018. Prof John Cryan and Dr Kathy Quane presented prizes to recipients in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience.

Congratulations to the first graduates of the new MSc in Human Anatomy who were conferred with their Master Degrees in UCC last friday. This first taught MSc in Human Anatomy in the Republic of Ireland was developed by Dr Siobhain O'Mahony and Dr Joy Balta, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC.

The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience is delighted to welcome the first class of Medical and Health Science students to UCC. This innovative and exciting new degree programme was conceived and developed by a team led by Professor Aideen Sullivan, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience.

At an event held recently in the Western Gateway building, Professor Aideen Sullivan (Programme Director) and Professor Ken O' Halloran (Head of Department of Physiology), welcomed the first BSc Medical and Health Sciences class to meet with staff from the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, School of Biochemistry & Cell Biology and School of Microbiology at a lunchtime buffet 'Meet and Greet'.

Congratulations to Ms Sofia Cussotto, finalist in 'Research Fest 2018', the annual PhD researcher pitch competition which is part of 'Inspirefest', Silicon Republic’s two day international festival of technology, science, design and the arts, which was held this year in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin on the 21st and 22nd June 2018. Sofia’s pitch looked at how psychotropic medication is used to manage mental disorders.

Dr. Yvonne Nolan, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, and Dr. Eithne Hunt, Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, have developed and recently presented 'Older and Wiser' a programme of Science based information and strategies to help our children develop healthy brains and daily habbits as they grow.

Congratulations to Dr. Katie Togher who graduated with a PhD in Neuroscience at the autumn graduations on October 26th 2018. Katie is already a graduate from the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience having graduated with an honours BSc Neuroscience in 2013.

Congratulations to Dr. Brunno R. Levone who graduated with a PhD in Neuroscience at the autumn graduations on October 26^th 2018. A Brazilian citizen, Dr. Levone's PhD studies were funded by the Science without Borders programme of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

The Department of Antatomy and Neuroscience hosted a very lively Neuroscience stand at the recent Summer Open day in UCC. Staff and researchers from the department chatted to TY students from all over Munster interested in a career in neuroscience at this two day event.

Professor John Cryan, Head of Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience UCC and Professor Ger Kelly, Head of Department of Mechanical, Biomedical & Manufacturing Engineering, Cork Institute of Technology have recently announced the commencement of a collaboration on one of CIT’s flagship degree programmes, the Bachelor of Engineering (BEng Hons) (Level 8) Biomedical Engineering.

Dementia and Neurodegenetation Network Ireland DNNI in association with Cork NeuroScience Centre hosted a very successful public outreach event in UCC on Saturday 10th March 2018. Experts from the Cork Neuroscience Centre gathered to raise awareness of causes and symptoms of Dementia, Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease, and to explain the latest research into how these conditions can be understood, treated and managed.

The Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience hosted its fourth Thanksgiving Service in memory of the people who donated their bodies for medical research. An important date in the Calender of the College of Medicine & Health at UCC, the Thanksgiving Service was held in the Honan Chapel UCC on Monday February 19th 2018. The service is a non-denominational celebration of the lives of all donors and especially of those donors who were part of the donation programme in the past two years.

A new book, ‘The Psychobiotic Revolution’, by Scott C. Anderson,‎ John F. Cryan,‎ and Ted Dinan, was launched on Tuesday evening in the Staff Common room by UCC President, Professor Patrick O'Shea.

The pupils from Scoil Naomh Fionan, Nohoval, Co. Cork embarked on an exciting journey of discovery into the world of gut bacteria. Along with Scientist and lecturer Dr. Siobhain O’Mahony they carried out a set of experiments investigating the impact of different food types on concentration levels in the classroom.

Dr André Toulouse, Director of the Biosciences Imaging Centre and Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience has received major funding from Science Foundation Ireland Infrastructure programme.

In 2013, the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience launched its AN3000 – Advanced Anatomical Skills module to complement its anatomy teaching to medical students. The course, offered as a student-selected module, allows students to appreciate Anatomy in a non-pressurised manner and is ideal for students with an interest in surgery, radiology or other anatomically-oriented disciplines of medicine.
