Brunno Rocha Levone a PhD student in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience was delighted to meet President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins at the opening of the 'Irish in Latin America Exhibition' held recently in the Aula Maxima University College Cork.

The word ‘Struggle’ was explored at the dlr Mill Theatre, Dundrum Dublin on the 8th of December 2016.  Among the invited speakers was Dr. Shane Hegarty, lecturer and researcher in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience.

Under the guidance of Professor Cryan, and Neuroscience co-ordinators Dr Yvonne Nolan (fourth year co-ordinator), and Dr Siobhain O'Mahony (third year co-ordinator), a large group of Neuroscience students from the department of Anatomy and Neuroscience visited the Glucksman Gallery this week, to to explore 'Gut Instinct: Art, Food and Feeling Exhibition' currently showing.

The Department would like to welcome four Dutch students who have recently begun six month internships in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience.

Congratulations to Professor John F Cryan who has been elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, having been identified and recognised by the Academy as one of Ireland’s world class researchers.

The FLAME lab are delighted to welcome new Technical Officer Wayne Sheehan to their team.  Having worked in a variety of careers to date Wayne is looking forward to his new position in the department.

Congratulations to Seán Whelan, BSc (Intercalated) Neuroscience Graduate 2016 who has been awarded the College of SEFS (Science, Engineering & Food Science) Graduate of the Year 2016 Award. Top-ranked students in each discipline are eligible for the award which recognises both academic excellence and extracurricular activities, and the recipient is selected by a panel from across the College.    

The new BSc Medical and Health Sciences degree programme developed by Professor Aideen Sullivan has been passed by the University Academic Programme Approval Panel and is due to take its first students in September 2018.

Congratulations to Katie Togher an Honours Neuroscience graduate in 2013 and currently a PhD researcher in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience/Obstetrics & Gynaecology/Infant/APC Microbiome Institute who was recently selected as finalist in the 'Science for All' competition.

A paper by Prof John Cryan, Dr Alan Hoban and Dr Gerard Clarke published recently in the journal Molecular Psychiatry has generated considerable interest in the Press. The research team have discovered a link between gut bacteria and the regulation of fear responses. 'It is turning upside down how we might develop strategies for fear and anxiety. It is a very exciting time for us” said Prof Cryan

The Neuroscience Stand was of great interest to the many transtion year students and their career guidance teachers who visited UCC for the annual Spring Open Day.  Dr Yvonne Nolan Neuroscience course coordinator and volunteers from the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience were delighted with the interest shown by students and career guidance teachers in the BSc Neuroscience degree.

The BSc in Medical and Health Sciences generated a lot of interest at the School of Medicine area of the Spring Open day held this week in the Aula Maxima. Professor Aideen Sullivan, course coordinator was on hand to chat about the new programme to Guidance Counsellors and interested Transition Year students.

Congratulations to the Neuroscience class of 2017 who have now competed their undergraduate studies in UCC and will graduate with a BSc in Neuroscience in the coming months.

The inaugural one day ' Focused Plastic Surgery Trauma Course'  was held in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience's FLAME laboratory on Saturday 27th May 2017. The course was attended by trainee plastic surgery and orthopaedic surgeons from all over Ireland and Europe with a special interest in trauma.

The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience is delighted to announce the launch of its new 12 month taught MSc degree in Human Anatomy.

At its annual meeting in Chicago (Digestive Disease Week 2017) recently, the newly formed Microbiome and Microbial Diseases of the GI Tract Section of  American Gastroenterology Association awarded Prof Cryan its prestigious Research Mentor award.

Prof. Cryan spoke at a TEDx Ha'penny Bridge event recently held Anne Street South, Dublin.

Professor John Cryan, Head of the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience and Principal Investigator in the APC Microbiome Institute, will become the first UCC scientist to be awarded the Tom Connor Distinguished Investigator Award from Neuroscience Ireland later today (August 28).

Professor John Cryan, Head of Dept. Anatomy & Neuroscience and Principal Investigator in the APC Microbiome Institute has been selected to be the new President of European Behavioural Pharmacology Society at its biennial meeting held in Heraklion, Crete this weekend.

Congratulations to Professor John F. Cryan, Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience/APC Microbiome Institute, winner of the 'UCC Research Communicator of the year 2017' award. The UCC Research Awards Programme for 2017 awards were presented by UCC President Professor Patrick O'Shea at the UCC Awards Ceremony held last Thursay 5th October in the Aula Maxima.

In an initiative supported by the American Association of Anatomists, Dr Joy Balta was invited by Dr. James Pickering from the University of Leeds to take part in a series of podcasts in which Anatomy teachers from around the world share their views and research in anatomical education.

Congratulations to Prof. John Cryan for being named among the world's most Highly Cited Researchers of 2017 by Clarivate Analytics.  Prof Cryan's research publications have ranked among the top 1% most cited works in the field of Neuroscience and Behavior worldwide.

In recognition of the Irish contribution to the field of Neuroscience, the Ambassador of Ireland Daniel Mulhall hosted Irish delegates of the Society for Neuroscience conference in Washington DC to an Irish Neuroscience Social at the Embassy of Ireland in Washington DC. Many US-based colleagues  also attended a highly enjoyable evening as well

The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience will host Transition Year students for a 5 day course exploring the structure and function of the human body at multiple levels. The course will take place April 30^th – May 4^th 2018. Places are limited.

Muhammad Javaid, a PhD student in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience presented his research findings as a poster at the New Horizons in Medical Research conference held in UCC, Western Gateway Building on 7th December 2017.

Congratulations to Ms Shauna Wallace Fitzsimons PhD student in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience who was awarded runner-up for best poster presentation at the New Horizons Medical Research conference held in UCC on December 7th.

Dr Mutahira Lone,  presented a paper at the ‘Knowledge Retention Across Curricular Models’ symposium held in the George Washington University, Washington D.C. on the 8th of December.

Congratulations to Professor Aideen Sullivan who has been appointed Editor in Chief of the recently launched journal 'Neuronal Signaling'. Developed by the Biochemical Society and published by Portland press, Neuronal Signaling publishes high-quality molecular and cellular neuroscience research.

Minister for Training and Skills John Halligan visited Prof Cryan's lab on February 17^th as part of a visit to Science Foundation Ireland Research Centres based in University College Cork.
