Dr O'Leary is a Senior Technical officer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience and has worked closely with various research groups in the department during his 35 years at UCC.

Congratulations to Dr Siobhain O’Mahony Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience who recently travelled to Finland to present her work at a Minisymposium “Brain-Gut-Microbiome axis” in the University of Turku. The symposium was held by FinnBrain-a research project studying the combined influence of environmental and genetic factors on the development of a child. 

NPR National Public Radio a highly respected Washington based public service broadcasting service features work of John Cryan and colleagues on the Rob Stein programme.  Rob Stein a correspondent and senior editor on NPR's science desk discusses how the gut microbes could talk to the brain.

Dr Siobhain O’Mahony delivered a very well received presentation at the 18th Shizuoka Forum on Health and Longevity in Shizuoka, Japan held  November 1^st and 2^nd 2013 .

Many Congratulations to Wesley van Oeffelen, PhD research student  in Professor John Cryan’s lab Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience & Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, for being selected as one of 12 international finalists in the 2013 Science “Dance your PhD” contest. 

Wesley Van Oeffelen represents department of Anatomy & Neuroscience at Thesis In 3. This competition will showcase the doctoral work of PhD students studying within Ireland. They'll deliver an "elevator pitch" overview of their work in just 3 minutes.

Professor John Cryan has been invited to present the 15th annual De Pazzi Lecture in Cork University Hospital. Professor Cryan will present a lecture entitled 'Unravelling the Impact of Stress on Health: Brain, Bowel & Behaviour' . The 15th annual De Pazzi Lecture will take place in the Main Lecture Theatre Cork University Hospital on October 9th at 1.00pm.

The Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, and Biosciences Institute were well represented at the recent Neuroscience Ireland Conference awards ceremony.

Dr. Eric Downer Lecturer and Principal Investigator Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, was presented with the prestigious Neuroscience Ireland Early Career Investigator Award at the 8th Neuroscience Ireland Conference which was held recently in UCC.

The 8th Neuroscience Ireland Conference a joint meeting with the Irish Area Section Biochemical Socity is being held in UCC this September 12th and 13th hopes to provide further insight into the workings of the brain in health and disease. A particular emphasis of the programme will be the vulnerable brain, in times of early and advanced age and during stress.

University College Cork scientists feature in, “Invisible Worlds”, the last of the current series of Dara O’Briain’s Science Club at 8pm on BBC2 TV tomorrow, Thursday, 29th August. 

Gut feelings: the future of psychiatry may be inside your stomach

In a study led by Cryan, anxious mice dosed with the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus (JB-1) showed lower levels of anxiety, decreased stress hormones, and even an increase in brain receptors for a neurotransmitter that’s vital in curbing worry, anxiety, and fear.

Alok Jah science correspondent at the Guardianat travels to University College Cork to meet Professor John Cryan, who has been researching whether gut microbes could be linked to mood, behaviour or even autism.  

Irish Examiner article by Clarie Droney discuses links between diet and Autism and how UCC scientists led by Professor John Cryan have discovered a link between gut bacteria and autistic behaviours. 

Rachel Moloney finalist in the recent UCC 'Science For All' competition, which aims to make science accessible, presented her research work 'Understanding the mechanisms underlying abdominal pain',  in the Evening Echo Thursday series  'A Closer look at Science'.

Gut feelings were the focus of a recent symposium held in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery,  to coincide with the final weekend of the ‘Experience of Illness’ exhibition.

The 6th European Workshop on Cannabinoid Research took place at Trinity College Dublin from Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th April. The conference was organised by the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) together with Irish cannabinoid researchers and was the largest and most high profile scientific conference on cannabis and cannabinoids ever held in Ireland.

To mark the European Month of the Brain the Cork Neuroscience Group in association with Neuroscience Ireland are delighted to  present their conference Parkinson’s Disease: from molecules to movement.

Dr Kieran McDermott and Dr Janelle Pakan have won the Anatomical Society best image prize 2013. The researchers have also received a honourable mention in the Olympus BioScapes International Digital Imaging Competition.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) will be the focus of an upcoming symposium at UCC on Saturday 9 March in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, from 11am-1pm.

John F. Cryan is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, University College Cork.

His current research interests include the neurobiological basis of stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety and drug dependence.

Recently-formed Parkinson’s Disease Research Cluster (PDRC). Co-founded by Dr Gerard O’Keeffe and Dr Aideen Sullivan in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, and Dr Sean O’Sullivan in the Department of Neuroscience, Cork University Hospital have successfully been awarded funding under the 2012 Translational Research Access Programme, which relates to a study titled “Potential biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease: comparison of levels of neurotrophic factors in cerebrospinal fluid and serum of Parkinson’s disease patients with those in healthy controls.”
