UCC's Prof Ed Byrne delivers Keynote at the 'Sustainable Development and Other Paradigms' Conference at University of Łódz

Prof Ed Byrne at the UNIC Conference on 'Sustainable Development and Other Paradigms'

Professor Ed Byrne of the School of Engineering and Architecture and Principal Investigator of the 'Deep Societal Innovation for Sustainability and Human Flourishing (DSIS)' project at the Sustainability Institute UCC attended the UNIC International Scientific Conference on 'Sustainable Development and Other Paradigms and Concepts in the Context of Contemporary Civilizational Trends - Global and Local Dimensions' held at University of Łódz from 10-11 September 2026. 

Ed delivered a keynote titled "The Sustainable Development Paradigm Misalignment? From Environmental Crisis to Climate Crisis to Polycrisis to Metacrisis". 

 

The presentation drew from work undertaken as part of the transdisciplinary Deep Societal Innovation for Sustainability and Human Flourishing (DSIS) project that Ed leads at UCC's Sustainability Institute.

The conference was situated within Thematic Line no. 2 (TL2: Sustainability & Green Cities), and also taking into account related issues within other thematic lines such as: Urban resilience & smart cities (TL3), Health and wellbeing (TL6) and Justice, security and institutions (TL4).

The conference featured a paper from collaborative work between University of Łódz and UCC "Public Participataion in Urban Climate Change Adaptation: Łódz and Cork"- presented by University of Łódz researcher, Maria Olbert. Congratulations to UCC researchers Niamh Guiry and Dr Dug Cubie from UCC School of Law on their contributions to this research.
