FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join?

UCC players is a staff drama group within ucc. Current membership is a healthy mix of current staff, former staff and graduates. The main criteria is a passion for some aspect of theatre and a desire to actively engage in a group with like minded individuals. No prior experience is needed but we do want active members. This can be as little as dropping by to listen in at weekly table reads occasionally or as much as being the diva on our next production!

How do I join?

If you are interested in joining the group, or wish to find out more, you can contact a member of the Committee or email uccplayers@ucc.ie.

Cost of membership?

The Annual Membership Fee is €30

What is the time commitment?

There is really as much time commitment as you desire. We meet weekly during term for informal catch up and some readings of potential plays. There are regular social outings. If involved in a production there will be an increase, socially coming up to a run.

Do I need to act if I join UCC Players?

Very relaxed group. Can come along on a Tuesday during term. Meet the group. No pressure to read but can do some reading of you like. Very non judgemental. Emphasis on a social side and group of friends working together as much as it is about a production.

What if my interest is in the backstage aspects of production?

There is regular training on aspects of back stage craft. Director of the production normally handles the front and back stage aspects. We are hoping to develop a core set, design and back stage crew group.

How does the UCC Players audition process work?

Once a production is agreed the audition process is handled by that productions director or production team. We are not a prescriptive group so the logistics vary depending on a particular directors approach. Generally we cast from within the group where possible and do open casting where it is not possible to fill a role from within the group. You may have seen such calls on AEU from time to time.

I am interested in a particular play. How can I get UCC Players to consider it?

The first step would be to bring the play for an informal table read over a few of the Tuesday night reads. How a play is received plays a large part in how we progress it.

I am interested in directing. How do I go about this?

We are always open to new ideas and there are lots of opportunities for people in all aspects of the staging craft. Generally a new director might start with a smaller piece to build experience and there are opportunities for this

I am interested in an administrative role in the committee. Where do I sign up?

Committee roles are open to all members at the AGM.  Generally near the start of a new calendar year.

What is the tone? Is this a very serious group?

The group do not take themselves too seriously. You can expect a lot of laughs as well as a reasonably focused approach at regular meet ups. but we do take the productions seriously.
