Pregnancy loss: A silent loss and challenging birth

Pregnancy loss has been a ‘silent’ and lonely experience in our Irish history. The increased recognition in civil, religious & societal approaches to pregnancy loss has provided improved awareness alongside improved overall care.

Abstract

Pregnancy loss has been a ‘silent’ experience and grief over the generations in our Irish history. This chapter explores how the attitudes and approaches to pregnancy loss have changed and developed in recent decades in various areas of Irish society and culture; including in religious approaches and understanding, civil recognition for stillbirth and improved maternity care.
