Abstract

The death of a baby through stillbirth raises many deep questions for parents. These questions can challenge our core beliefs and meaning structures. There was little known about this impact and this study sought to understand what the spiritual impact of stillbirth was on bereaved parents. The parents of twelve babies who died through stillbirth participated in this qualitative study. Their interviews were analysed in an indepth way to understand at depth the meaning and experiences of stillbirth for them. Stillbirth was identified as an immensely challenging spiritual and personal experience with enduring impact for parents. Parents described searching for meaning, maintaining hope and questioning core beliefs. Most parents reported that their spiritual needs were not adequately addressed while in hospital. The faith of all parents was challenged with only one parent experiencing a stronger faith following stillbirth. The results from this study highlight the need for better pastoral support in the maternity services.
