Celebrating International Women’s Day with students and staff at St Angela’s College

On Friday 07 March, members of the PLRG celebrated International Women's Day 2025 with the students and staff of St Angela’s College, Cork, collaborators on the SPRING project. Dr Laura Linehan, Dr Brendan Fitzgerald and Susan Dineen attended the event.
The celebration featured a variety of activities, from quizzes and posters to a Coffee Morning for Student Council, guests and staff. Susan Dineen, a Specialist Medical Scientist in Perinatal Pathology at Cork University Hospital and former student of St Angela’s, participated in the main panel session alongside eight other inspirational speakers. The theme of the day was “Voice”. From various backgrounds, the speakers stories and insights empowered the audience to reflect on the strength, resilience, and achievements of women in so many different career areas and pursuits, as well as the importance of empowering, encouraging and supporting each other. Members of the Student Council spoke of the importance of women’s individual voices and of the strength of women’s collective voice, especially in current times. Students showcased their creativity through, delivering original speeches, pieces of literature and presentations, alongside a slideshow.
The SPRING project featured in a very impressive poster display outlining the student’s journey to date. The project aims to improve knowledge at secondary school age level of issues in relation to fertility difficulties and pregnancy loss, including miscarriage and stillbirth. At present, the girls are developing resources for information sharing with teens.
As part of the celebrations, the school hosted a fundraiser for Féileacáin, raising over €1200. Mairie Cregan, Founder of Féileacáin, was present on the day to accept the donation. She and Jill Millard, spoke about pregnancy loss and the impact on women and their families. They demonstrated the type of work the charity does by sharing the memory boxes and hand and foot prints with the girls. This was really well received.
Many thanks to the Student Council, the Reading Revolution, and the Transition Year students involved in the SPRING project, for organising and leading this inspiring event.
